About Joyce Shen
Joyce Shen is a serial technology investor and entrepreneur. She is an early investor in several iconic technology companies of the modern era. Joyce is the Managing Partner at Together Expedition, a venture capital firm that invests in bold founders who build emerging technology companies for a better future and focus on key areas such as finance, risk management, human health, and sustainable resources.
Joyce Shen has extensive experience and deep knowledge in incubating, investing in, growing, scaling, and managing new businesses in both global public companies and early to growth stage technology startups. With significant investing as well as cross-functional leadership and operating experience that span business and technology strategy, M&A, corporate finance, FP&A, product, and GTM, Joyce has successfully funded, built, and scaled new businesses in both global public companies and private technology companies. Joyce's technical expertise centers around emerging technologies, enterprise software, big data & analytics, machine learning & AI, and cybersecurity.
Previously, Joyce served as the investment and operating partner at a prominent family office in New York. She was responsible for sourcing, investing in, and managing technology investments.
Earlier in her career, Joyce served as the Global Managing Director in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer at Thomson Reuters (Refinitiv, Reuters News, and Thomson Reuters), where she built the first corporate venture fund and invested in early-stage enterprise software and data startups. In addition to investing, Joyce was also responsible for creating and implementing the cohesive global emerging technology strategy, technology scouting, and startup ecosystem as well as partnerships. Joyce has built deal flow and led early-stage investments in the areas of big data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, fintech, blockchain, and alternative data. Joyce also developed the business case that led to the establishment of the global data science labs, an enduring initiative that continues to deliver impact today.
Before Thomson Reuters, Joyce served as the founding Global Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer of IBM Cloud Platform responsible for a multi-billion P&L. During her tenure, Joyce also created and implemented the business case and operating plan for IBM Garage, a digital transformation service unit for IBM’s largest enterprise clients. Prior to IBM Cloud, Joyce led finance and operations of IBM Collaboration Solutions, restructured the Lotus business, and integrated the $1 billion Kenexa acquisition. Earlier in her career at IBM, Joyce served as the M&A transactions executive at IBM Corporate Development, where she led acquisitions over $6 billion and executed inorganic strategy in cloud, data management, and cybersecurity. One of her special projects for the IBM CFO and Board of Directors was the application of statistical methods to help identify successful acquisition targets. In addition to M&A, Joyce implemented investment programs for the IBM-Lehman Brothers China Venture Fund in Beijing and the IBM Watson AI Fund.
Since 2016, Joyce has been an adjunct faculty at the School of Information of UC Berkeley teaching the data science Capstone course virtually. She leads graduate students to apply machine learning and AI to build meaningful products that can contribute to the improvement of human society. She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the University of Oxford.
Joyce serves in a strategic capacity on the boards of a number of technology companies. She is a trustee and a member of the finance committee for the Altman Foundation. Joyce also serves on the innovation advisory council for the World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator and was a member of the advisory board for Enterprise Estonia, Per Scholas, and Sponsors for Education Opportunity (SEO) Junior Leadership Board.
As a SEO alumna since 2005, Joyce is actively involved through mentoring and fundraising.
Joyce received two bachelor degrees in Statistics and Economics from The University of Chicago and holds an MBA with concentrations in Quantitative Finance, Entrepreneurship, and Strategy from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She has also studied at the London School of Economics. Joyce has published three books on entrepreneurship, innovation, and blockchain. Joyce is a patent holder on detecting and locating unsecured sensors in critical infrastructures.
