Joyce J. Shen

Joyce Shen is a venture capital/private equity investor and a business builder. Joyce has extensive experience in investing institutional and family office capital in emerging technology companies and guiding those investments in different industries to generate value as an investor and board director. Joyce's technical expertise centers around emerging technologies, data, and machine learning & AI.
With unique and significant cross-functional experience that span VC/PE, M&A, corporate finance, corporate strategy, product innovation, and go-to-market, Joyce has successfully funded, built, and scaled new businesses in both global public companies and private technology companies.
Joyce has published three books on blockchain in financial services, innovation, entrepreneurship. Joyce is an inventor of a patent on detecting and locating unsecured sensors in critical infrastructures.
Joyce has served on the boards of technology companies. She is a board member of the University of Chicago Alumni Association in New York, a Trustee of the Altman Foundation, and a member of the innovation advisory council of the World Food Programme. She was a member of the Advisory Boards of Enterprise Estonia, Per Scholas, and Sponsors for Education Opportunity (SEO).
Since 2016, Joyce has served as an adjunct data science faculty teaching graduate students at the University of California Berkeley and received two Distinguished and Excellence in Teaching Awards. She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and at the Saïd Business School, the University of Oxford.
Joyce was the Global Managing Director in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer at Thomson Reuters. She built the corporate venture fund and invested in early-stage enterprise software and data startups. Joyce was also responsible for creating and implementing the cohesive global emerging technology strategy, technology scouting, and startup ecosystem and partnerships.
Prior to Thomson Reuters, Joyce was the founding Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer of IBM Cloud Platform responsible for a multi-billion P&L. Before that, Joyce led finance, operations, and acquisition integration of the $1 billion Collaboration and HR SaaS software business. She started her career in IBM M&A Corporate Development, closing acquisitions over $6 billion in cloud, data management, and security.
Joyce received two bachelor’s degrees in Statistics and Economics from the University of Chicago, where she worked two jobs as a research assistant for the former Chair of Political Science and a teaching assistant in Statistics. Joyce received an MBA with concentrations in Quantitative Finance, Entrepreneurship, and Strategy from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where she served as the president of her cohort. Joyce also completed graduate studies in economics and M&A law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
